The defendants in the 2014 murder of Aseel Ahmed have been found guilty. Aseel, a native of Blue Nia-ge in Th. Thimarafushi, was killed in Dhidhi Goalhi, located directly in front of Iskandhar School.
In the murder case of Aseel, the state has pressed terrorism charges against six individuals: Ahmed Nimshad of Sweetdream, GDh. Thinadhoo; Ahmed Jaufar of Hulhumale' 10118; Ismail Rifau of Dhafthar 6566; Ihusan Rasheed of Aabahaaruge, GDh. Vaadhoo; Hassan Isam Mohamed of M. Goldbirdlily; and Shariif Shariif of Ma. Raalhu-erige.
The six individuals have been charged with terrorism for an assault that took place on the night of August 23, 2014. According to the prosecution, the group arrived near the "Agora Express" shop at approximately 8:45 p.m. and launched a coordinated attack using sharp-edged weapons against Aseel and two others who were with him at the time.
Aseel passed away on the afternoon of August 29, 2014, while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at IGMH.
The Criminal Court is currently conducting a retrial of this case following a remand order. The High Court issued the ruling on November 23, 2025, ordering a retrial after the defendants initially charged in connection with the death of Aseel Ahmed were acquitted.
The court reached a guilty verdict in this case last week. However, the proceedings against Ismail Rifau could not move forward as he failed to attend the scheduled hearing. With the exception of Sharif Sharif, all other defendants were found guilty. The court will proceed to sentencing in the next stage of the trial.
While these individuals are being tried for the murder of Aseel, terrorism charges were also brought against two minors in connection with the case. In August 2016, the Juvenile Court found both minors guilty and sentenced them to 13 years and four months in prison.
