The Parliament has approved an increase in the allowances for the Chief Justice, raising the total monthly salary to MVR 95,125.
The decision was approved by the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee during its session held on Tuesday. The proposal to review and increase the salary and allowances of the Chief Justice was submitted by Mohamed Mamdhooh, the Member of Parliament for the Funadhoo constituency and a member of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
The decision was put to a vote on Wednesday and passed with a majority of 40 members.
The Parliament recently decided to increase the salaries of the Speaker of Parliament as well as government ministers.
In light of these changes, some have raised concerns regarding the appropriateness of increasing the salaries of high-ranking state officials at a time when ordinary employees of state-owned enterprises are being dismissed.
