Mauroof Zakir, the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, has expressed concern over the Public Accounts Committee's decision to reduce the budget proposed by the Auditor General's Office for the upcoming year.
Debating the Public Accounts Committee's report on the review of next year's proposed budget during Tuesday's parliamentary sitting, MP Mauroof stated that there are several concerning issues within the report.
In this regard, the member noted that the budget approved by the Public Accounts Committee is significantly lower than the initial proposal submitted by the Audit Office.
The member stated that while the Audit Office is mandated with significant responsibilities—including ensuring accountability in government financial transactions, maintaining debt sustainability, and bolstering public confidence in state revenue and expenditure—the institution must be provided with adequate resources and a sufficient budget to fulfill these obligations.
Mauroof expressed concern over the Audit Office's budget decreasing year after year, noting that such a trend is particularly worrying as the current term draws to a close.
Mauroof stated that the Audit Office plays a vital role in ensuring the government's financial accountability, and emphasized the importance of providing the office with the necessary resources to fulfill its mandate.
MP Mauroof has called for further legislative amendments to ensure the Auditor General’s Office is allocated an adequate budget. The MP stated that the Audit Office can only fulfill its mandate effectively if provided with sufficient funding and resources. He warned that failure to do so would obstruct the operations of a vital institution responsible for overseeing the state's finances.
The Auditor General's Office is an independent institution that plays a vital role in overseeing state finances and monitoring government expenditure. Through its work, the office exposes irregularities in government financial transactions and ensures that public funds are managed and utilized responsibly.
