Public trust lost as members act like bots: Mauroof

He further noted that there would be no reason for the public to question parliamentary benefits if citizens were already provided with adequate access to essential healthcare services.

Mauroof Zakir, the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, stated that the true reason for public outrage over the substantial allowances received by lawmakers is that members act as mere "bots" within the Parliament.
During the debate on a petition calling for the abolition of high-end health insurance packages for Members of Parliament—benefits currently unavailable to the general public—Mauroof highlighted the key reasons behind the public's loss of trust in their representatives.
Speaking on the floor of the Parliament, Mauroof stated that while the public faces numerous concerns, the representatives elected to voice those issues have failed to do so. He noted that instead of advocating for the rights of the people, members have fallen under the influence of specific interests. He highlighted this as the primary reason why lawmakers are facing significant public backlash.
Speaking on the healthcare system, Mauroof stated that there is immense public concern and widespread complaints regarding the lack of access to adequate medical treatment.
He further stated that if citizens' basic needs and healthcare services were fully met, there would be no reason for the public to pursue members of parliament or question the allowances and benefits they receive.
Furthermore, Mauroof highlighted that as representatives of the people, it is essential for Members of Parliament to work with a deep understanding of the public's sentiments. However, he noted that instead of amplifying the voices of the people, members currently appear to prioritize other interests. He stated that this shift in priorities is a key factor contributing to the diminishing reputation of the entire institution.
This petition, calling for the abolition of health insurance benefits for Members of Parliament, has been submitted to advocate for a reduction in state expenditure and to bridge the disparity between lawmakers and the general public.
