Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas has stated that the People's Majlis dismissed two Supreme Court justices in a split second, asserting that the members responsible should be ashamed to speak so boldly about criminal procedure and the judicial system.
Speaking at Tuesday's parliamentary sitting, MP Abbas stated that the Maldivian people will only reap the true benefits of legislative amendments when they are implemented with sincere intent and the judiciary is finally liberated from political influence.
MP Abbas noted that every incoming administration pledges to grant independence to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and vows never to betray the national flag. However, he questioned which administration has actually succeeded in making the judiciary independent. Furthermore, Abbas stated that if the People's Majlis Secretariat acts in a manner that displeases the presiding parliamentary majority, their powers are clipped and they are forcefully removed.
MP Abbas strongly criticized the members of Parliament who sought to remove two Supreme Court justices from the bench.
As amendments to the Criminal Procedure Act are being proposed, we must reflect on how this honorable Parliament acted just recently regarding two Supreme Court justices. In a matter devoid of any visible evidence, two upright, educated, capable, and dedicated young judges were ousted from the Supreme Court in a split second. Honorable Speaker, those in this chamber who orchestrated that move should be ashamed to speak today of criminal procedures, justice, or the judicial system. That action was nothing short of mockery and an insult to the Maldivian people.Mohamed Abbas
MP Abbas stated that if this amendment is being introduced for a narrow purpose or specifically to imprison a particular individual, the Maldivian people as a whole will not reap its benefits.
Furthermore, Abbas expressed concern over the stagnation of development projects in various islands, stating that when ministers visit these communities, they are blatantly spreading falsehoods in broad daylight.
