The People's Majlis Secretariat has scheduled the commencement of the third session of the current year for next Monday.
According to the parliamentary rules of procedure, the sittings for the third session must commence within the first week of October.
Several key items have been placed on the agenda for the first sitting of the current session, scheduled for Monday, August 5. Among these is the formal submission of the President's nomination for the position of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation, which has been forwarded to the Parliament for approval.
Furthermore, Monday's parliamentary agenda includes a request from the President seeking the People's Majlis' approval for the Maldives to join an international treaty. The matter concerns the Maldives' accession to the "Makkah Al-Mukarramah Convention of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation on Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Cooperation."
The current parliamentary session will also include deliberations on a significant government-sponsored piece of legislation. Specifically, the preliminary debate on the Proceeds of Crime Bill is scheduled to take place. This bill aims to strengthen the legal framework and procedures for the state to seize assets and funds acquired through criminal activities.
Members of Parliament went on recess in late August following the conclusion of the second session of the year. During this upcoming session, the government is expected to submit the state budget for the following year, with the crucial tasks of reviewing and passing the budget set to take place.
