Construction of eight classrooms and a multipurpose hall in Bandidhoo, launched ahead of the local council elections, comes to a standstill

The project came to a standstill after workers reportedly left the island due to unpaid wages, leaving behind excavated pits that have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and created a public health nuisance for the local community.

The Bandidhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the suspension of a project to construct eight classrooms and a multipurpose hall, which was initiated in Dhaalu Atoll Bandidhoo ahead of the local council elections.
Expressing concern over the situation, the Vice President of the Dh. Bandidhoo Council, Ahmed Eesa, stated that the project was initiated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration to coincide with the council elections. He noted that the project currently remains in the exact state it was left when work came to a standstill following the conclusion of the elections.
Easa stated that work had initially commenced with the excavation of 98 pits. He further noted that following complaints from residents regarding mosquito breeding in these pits, the council coordinated with the project contractor to have them backfilled.
Furthermore, Easa noted that the dimensions of the area had changed between the initial chart and the one presented later.
The initial charts provided to us indicated that the plot measured 77 feet by 150 feet. However, we were subsequently informed that those charts were incorrect; the actual dimensions are smaller, measuring approximately 47 feet by 100-plus feet.Ahmed Easa
Easa stated that the workers brought in for the project have already departed due to non-payment of wages. He further noted that among the materials supplied for the work, 500 bags of cement have now hardened and gone to waste.
