The Criminal Court has ordered a 30-day remand for a man accused of riding a motorcycle across the bridge while lying down on the seat without a helmet.
The court has ordered the remand of Ahmed Fariz, 26, of Snowsky, K. Maafushi, in connection with this case. The court further specified that he be held in a custodial prison facility for the duration of his detention.
According to the order issued by the Criminal Court, the decision to remand Faris was based on the potential threat to public safety should he be released. He faces allegations of obstructing police duty, damaging property, and dangerous driving. The police have submitted sufficient evidence to the court to support the allegations against him. This evidence includes statements from the officers who attended the scene, reports from crime scene officers, and snapshots from CCTV footage.
Regarding the incident, police testified in court that Fariz continued to drive against the flow of traffic on a one-way street, repeatedly ignoring orders to stop. Authorities further alleged that he intentionally struck the police vehicle with his motorcycle and continued to drive in a manner that caused it to scrape against the car. However, Fariz contested this account in court, denying that he struck the police vehicle. He instead claimed that the police intentionally rammed his motorcycle with their car, causing him to crash.
Furthermore, the court order stated that Fariz had confessed to riding a motorcycle across the Sinamale' Bridge without a helmet while under the influence of intoxicants. The presiding judge noted that operating a vehicle while intoxicated poses a significant threat to the life of the driver as well as the safety of other road users. However, Fariz denied the allegations that he had been operating the motorcycle while lying down on the seat.
In the order issued by Criminal Court Chief Judge Adam Mohamed, the court ruled to keep Faris in custody, citing Sections 59 and 60 of the Criminal Procedure Act. The current remand period is set to expire on November 10.
