Murder of Ahusan Basheer: Supreme Court to issue final verdict on Shahum's death sentence!

Following the presentation of closing statements from both parties, the five-judge bench presiding over the matter has moved the case to the verdict stage. During the final proceedings, the bench sought further clarification on several previously unresolved points before concluding the hearings.

The Supreme Court has concluded hearings to determine the finality of the death sentence issued against Ibrahim Shahum, who was convicted of the stabbing death of Ahusan Basheer of Varudheege, Addu Hithadhoo.
Monday's hearing was convened to clarify specific matters prior to the court delivering its final verdict on the case.
During the hearing, both the state and Shahum provided responses to the questions previously raised by the judges.
Following the final statements from both parties, the judges concluded the hearings for the case.
Consequently, the next step in this case will be the hearing to deliver the final verdict.
The case is being presided over by a Supreme Court bench consisting of Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim, Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed, Justice Ali Rasheed Hussain, Justice Abdulla Hameed, and Justice Mohamed Saleem.
The High Court recently overturned a 2014 lower court ruling that had acquitted Hassan Shimaz Mohamed Suwad of Ma. Venusthari and Ibrahim Shahum Adam of G. Cosy. Upon appeal, the High Court found both individuals guilty of the charges brought against them.
The conviction of the two individuals was based on a dying declaration. In delivering the verdict, the judge noted that courts in many jurisdictions place significant weight on statements made by a person who has no hope of recovery and is facing imminent death.
It was noted that prior to his death, Ahusan stated to several individuals while in the hospital that the two defendants in this case were responsible for his murder. However, the judge ruled that Shimaz, who was convicted of aiding and abetting the murder, cannot be given the same sentence as the primary perpetrator of the crime.
In this regard, Shimaz has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, while Shahum has been handed the death penalty.
Furthermore, the High Court has overturned the Criminal Court's verdict, which had previously ruled that the charges were not proven. Consequently, the State has appealed to the Supreme Court seeking to uphold the original judgment.
