Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has stated that allocating land from Ras Male' to foreign parties constitutes a major act of treason against the nation.
In a post on X on Saturday, Mayor Azim stated that the vast tract of land in Ras Male' was not actually leased to a foreign entity. He further alleged that the agreement includes clauses ensuring the Maldivian people will never be able to reclaim the land.
Azim stated that simply labeling the cover of a document as a "lease agreement" does not legally constitute a valid lease. He further characterized the move as an attempt to deceive the public.
Azim further stated that this agreement constitutes a grave betrayal of both the current generation of Maldivians and the generations to come.
Furthermore, Azim called for the immediate termination of this dangerous agreement, which he claimed grants foreign entities ownership over Maldivian soil and the nation's future.
Despite President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s earlier assurances that not a single grain of sand from the land reclaimed under the Ras Male' project would be handed over to foreign parties, the government has revealed plans to lease the land to a UAE-based company for 99 years. This decision has sparked widespread concern among the general public and political figures alike.
The government has announced that the agreement entails the development of an international-standard waterfront and marina project in Ras Male'.
