Parliamentary Committee of the Whole House passes bill to amend Waste Management Act

The Whole House Committee of the People's Majlis has passed the government-proposed bill to strengthen the national waste management system, incorporating three primary amendments. Following a review by the Environment Committee, the bill received 65 votes in favor, aiming to establish a more robust and structured framework for waste management across the Maldives.

The Committee of the Whole House of the People’s Majlis on Wednesday passed the government-proposed bill to amend the Waste Management Act.

This bill was introduced on behalf of the government by Ungoofaaru MP Ibrahim Shifaz, with the objective of further strengthening the nation's waste management system.

The bill was reviewed by a subcommittee of the Environment and Climate Change Committee. During Wednesday's sitting, the subcommittee's report on the review was presented to the floor by the Member for South Maafannu, Abdulla Rifau. While presenting the report, Rifau proposed that the Committee of the Whole House pass the bill with the amendments incorporated by the subcommittee.

When the bill was put to a vote in the Committee of the Whole House, 65 members present at the session voted in favor of its passage. During the review process, it was noted that three primary amendments were incorporated into the bill.

According to the bill, these amendments to the Waste Management Act aim to establish a more robust and systematic framework for waste management practices in the Maldives.
