NIC urges public to refrain from obstructing duties of law enforcement agencies

The National Integrity Commission has urged the public to refrain from obstructing the work of law enforcement agencies and spreading misinformation on social media that undermines the credibility of their officers. While the Commission encouraged citizens to formally report any suspected unlawful conduct by officers for investigation, it noted a concerning rise in targeted social media harassment against enforcement personnel in recent weeks.

The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has expressed concern over social media discourse aimed at inciting public mistrust and creating a negative perception of law enforcement agencies as they carry out their legal mandates and responsibilities.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commission underscored that the efforts of law enforcement agencies are invaluable contributions toward ensuring national security and public safety.

Consequently, the National Integrity Commission (NIC) has appealed to the public to refrain from any actions that may obstruct the work of these agencies and to provide full assistance and cooperation in the enforcement of the law.

Furthermore, the National Integrity Commission (NIC) emphasized that any individual has the right to submit a complaint or request an investigation if law enforcement agencies or their personnel are alleged to have acted in violation of the law, regulations, or established procedures.

The commission further stated that investigating such complaints is a statutory responsibility mandated under Law No. 27/2015 (National Integrity Commission Act).

The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has urged the public to submit complaints through the legally established channels if any law enforcement officer is suspected of committing an unlawful act. At the same time, the Commission reminded officers of law enforcement agencies to remain steadfast in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities within the bounds of the law.

The National Integrity Commission (NIC) issued this statement following recent incidents where a female Customs officer was targeted on social media with serious allegations and leaked photographs. In a separate incident, a video circulated online showing a female employee of the Male' City Council being harassed and subjected to verbal abuse while performing her duties. In response to these events, the Member of Parliament for North Galolhu, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), sent a formal letter to Commissioner of Police Ahmed Mohamed on August 3, 2024, requesting a thorough investigation into these matters.
