This election is being held to appoint members to the Local Government Authority (LGA) board from among local councilors and the presidents of Women's Development Committees.
In this election, the candidates contesting for island council seats include Ali Ahmed, President of the F. Nilandhoo Council, representing the People's National Congress (PNC), and Ali Zafir, President of the N. Manadhoo Council, representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Regarding the Women's Development Committees (WDC), Mariyam Zeena, President of the Sh. Funadhoo WDC, is contesting on the PNC ticket, while Mariyam Neena, President of the L. Gan WDC, is representing the MDP.
Criticizing the decision to postpone the election, MDP Chairperson President Mohamed Nasheed stated that the move was an "admission of defeat by the government." President Nasheed further emphasized that the election must be held on its originally scheduled date.
