The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has requested the Prosecutor General’s Office to press money laundering charges against MHR Trading in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement scandal.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has announced its decision to seek money laundering charges against MHR Trading Private Limited in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement scandal. The case was forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office following a joint investigation conducted by the ACC and the Maldives Police Service.
An investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has revealed that a total of $325,000 was deposited into the accounts of MHR and its subsidiary shop through several SOF checks issued on various occasions throughout 2014 and 2015.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has stated that its investigation revealed that $50,000, paid to MMPRC as the acquisition cost for ADh. Fushidhigga, was deposited into the account of MHR through Abdulla Ziyath, a key figure in the MMPRC embezzlement scandal. The commission further noted that the investigation confirmed the check was deposited into MHR’s account and the funds were subsequently utilized.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation has revealed that checks from SOF’s account were deposited into MHR’s account. Furthermore, communications between Abdulla Ziyath and the Managing Director of MHR indicate that circumstances existed where the MD should have reasonably suspected that the funds deposited into the company's account were obtained through criminal activity.
In addition to filing money laundering charges against the company, a decision has been made to instruct the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) to recover MVR 5,011,500, which is the equivalent value of the dollars deposited via SOF checks. Furthermore, the authorities have decided to direct MMPRC to recover the USD 50,000 paid as the acquisition fee for Fushidhigga, along with any profits generated through the investment of those funds.
