State Budget Records MVR 1.5 Billion Deficit

Despite President Muizzu’s pledge to prioritize healthcare in the MVR 64.2 billion budget, mid-year data shows health spending lagging behind expenditures for the police and national defense force.

From January 1 through July 16, 2026, government spending outpaced overall income, resulting in a state budget deficit of MVR 1.5 billion.
Data published in the Ministry of Finance's Weekly Fiscal Development Report on July 21 reveals that public income and incoming grants totaled MVR 22,979.7 million during this timeframe. In contrast, total government expenditures reached MVR 24,515 million over the same period. An analysis of the government's financial metrics confirms that the overall budget shortfall reached MVR 1,535.3 million within these dates.
For the whole year, the administration put forward and the People’s Majlis authorized a total budget amounting to MVR 64.2 billion.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu previously highlighted that investing in public health is essential, stressing that the 2026 financial plan would place the highest priority on healthcare above any other sector.
However, mid-year financial tracking indicates that disbursements for the Ministry of Health, Family, and Welfare lags the amounts spent on both the Maldives Police Service (MPS), and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
