Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, the Member of Parliament for the South Hulhumale' constituency, has stated that even during the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, the previous administration consistently kept the public informed about the state's fiscal and economic situation. However, he noted that today, the public is left in the dark, even regarding the whereabouts of the Finance Minister.
MP Shamheed made these remarks while speaking on RaajjeTV's "Fala Surukhee" program.
Shamheed stated that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East will inevitably impact the Maldives. He specifically noted that a prolonged war would have significant repercussions on the country's financial and economic stability.
Despite the current situation, Shamheed noted that the Finance Minister appears to be in hiding, pointing out that the Minister has remained silent and failed to address these pressing issues.
One of the most pivotal figures has yet to appear before the cameras: the Finance Minister. We have not seen him address these issues at all. It is quite possible he is staying out of sight simply because he does not know what to say.Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, Member of Parliament for the South Hulhumale' constituency.
Shamheed further stated that during the previous MDP administration, the government had to navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that even then, the government maintained transparency by keeping the public informed about the nation's financial and economic situation. He added that, as a result, the public was well aware of the country's circumstances at that time.
He stated that this is a matter that requires deep reflection from the Maldivian people. He further noted that these developments highlight the clear differences in how the two administrations manage such affairs.
Opposition figures have asserted that the recent hike in diesel and petrol prices in the Maldives, attributed to Middle Eastern instability, was not necessitated by the current situation. This sentiment is echoed by the general public, who find the price increase unacceptable, particularly following statements from Economic Minister Saeed confirming that a new fuel shipment is already en route and that cargo shipping routes remain unobstructed.
