President signs Organ Transplantation Bill into law with new amendments

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Human Organ Transplantation Bill.
President Muizzu ratified the bill on Thursday, following its initial submission on May 14. The President had previously returned the bill to Parliament without ratification.
President Muizzu stated that the reason for his decision was to address the potential implementation challenges arising from the amendments made to the bill during the parliamentary approval process.
Regarding the provision in the bill allowing inmates to donate organs, the President stated that he does not believe prisoners are in a position to provide full and voluntary consent for such donations.
Following the committee's review and subsequent amendments, the bill was passed on July 14. It was then forwarded for presidential ratification on July 16.
Following the President's ratification of the bill on Thursday, it has now officially become law. The legislation is set to come into effect on January 11, 2027.
Furthermore, the bill outlines the general principles for organ transplantation and defines the rights of both donors and recipients.
Policies governing the organ transplant system will be established by the "Organ Transplant Council," to be formed by the President. Furthermore, authorization for organ transplantation procedures in the Maldives will be granted by the "Organ Transplant Authorization Committee," established under this Act.
