Broken promises and youth betrayal in Muizzu's Maldives

Young Maldivians face widespread disillusionment as the current administration fails to deliver on job creation and economic stability. Qualified graduates report being overlooked for political appointees while struggling with stagnant wages and a high cost of living. Recent polls highlight a vanishing sense of hope among the youth.

Reflecting on the political spectacles, persuasive speeches, and grand declarations made during the presidential campaigns roughly three years back, current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged significant commitments to young citizens, promising that his government would place top priority on uplifting the up-and-coming generation.

By charming younger voters with these assurances, he successfully captured their electoral support and claimed the nation's highest office.

Stranded graduates and political purges

Ever since the incumbent assumed his official duties, the situation on the ground has taken a harsh turn. Rather than experiencing genuine advancement, an entire cohort of academically trained young individuals who stand eager to contribute to the nation find themselves abandoned.

A rising wave of public indignation centers on the scarcity of job openings and earnings that fail to keep pace with daily expenses. Regardless of holding advanced degrees and formal credentials, many complain about severely limited options or, more drastically, being fired from their positions and thrust into poverty simply because of their political leanings.

These represent the primary complaints among young people today, who struggle to see how the current national trajectory offers any practical remedies to these dilemmas.

Skyrocketing living expenses and unearned favoritism

Numerous young workers emphasize that the paltry paychecks they receive fall well short of covering routine daily costs. With the market rates for everyday items and essentials climbing continuously, they maintain that their earnings can no longer satisfy even their most essential requirements.

Further, they point out that political appointments regularly ignore educational background and technical skill, stripping deserving, qualified candidates of the positions they rightfully earned.

Digital poll exposes widespread disillusionment

In an effort to gauge the specific hurdles confronting the younger populace, a survey was conducted inside an Instagram community comprising individuals between twenty and twenty-eight years old.

The inquiry asked whether the present administration was actively creating avenues for young people and sought their assessment of the leadership's general strategy.

The overwhelming response was negative. One particular individual finishing up higher education highlighted how high-ranking state leaders publicly insist that abundant avenues exist, yet in truth, youth remain overlooked without any clear path forward.

This individual noted that despite wrapping up a degree, securing a respectable job remains impossible, and after settling steep housing costs, nothing remains to purchase food due to the exorbitant cost of living.

Vanishing hope under static policies

Surrounded by this multitude of complaints, the younger demographic continues to point out that the existing strategic plans of the leadership fail to provide them with viable alternatives, causing their expectations for tomorrow to steadily vanish.
