RaajjeMV has learned that the island's health center is currently operating without any doctors or nurses. As an island with a thriving tourism industry, this situation has sparked significant concern among both the general public and local business owners.
When contacted by the "Fashaairu" program regarding the issue, a Thinadhoo Council employee stated that the health center does not answer phone calls as there are currently no doctors or nurses stationed there. The employee further noted that this situation has persisted for over a month.
Furthermore, despite repeated attempts to contact the Ministry of Health and its media official regarding this matter, they have failed to respond to the calls.
As the island is a prominent hub for the guesthouse industry, an official from the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade stated that permits to operate guesthouses are only issued if the island has an established health center capable of providing medical services. However, the official noted that they had not yet been informed of a service disruption in Thinadhoo due to a lack of doctors and nurses. The official further assured that they would work in coordination with the Ministry of Health to investigate the matter and seek a resolution.
Thinadhoo typically hosts over 300 tourists, with numbers rising to between 500 and 600 during the peak season. Residents have characterized the lack of medical services for over a month as a major oversight by the government, especially for an island that contributes significant tax revenue to the state.
In terms of the island's administrative governance, the operations of the Thinadhoo Council have come to a standstill. Following a determination by the Local Government Authority (LGA) that Council President Shujau Ali has lost his seat, only two members currently remain on the council. This situation has led to significant challenges in reaching decisions on critical matters concerning the island.
The current suspension of healthcare services poses a significant threat to the safety of both residents and tourists, leaving the community without a clear protocol for medical emergencies. Local residents are urgently calling for an immediate solution to address this critical situation.
