The Parliament's Government Oversight Committee has approved the appointment of Hassan Zareer as the Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, following his nomination by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Zareer was appointed to the position on June 8, following the vacancy created by the resignation of the then-Finance Minister, Moosa Zameer.
The Government Oversight Committee, tasked with reviewing the appointment of Zareer as Minister of Finance, convened on Monday and recommended granting him parliamentary approval. The motion to approve Zareer was proposed by Ali Fazad, the Member of Parliament for the Central Fuvahmulah constituency, and was seconded by Hassan Waheed, MP for Vilufushi constituency.
The proposal was passed by a unanimous vote of the members present at the committee meeting.
RaajjeMV understands that Zameer cited health reasons for his resignation. In his resignation letter, he noted that his medical condition requires hospitalization and mentioned that he was recently admitted for treatment. Zameer underwent surgery last December. His letter further explained that given the demanding nature of a cabinet minister's responsibilities, his current health status does not permit him to continue in the role.
Prior to assuming his current role, Zareer served as the Commissioner General of Taxation, heading the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). In addition to being a qualified Chartered Accountant, Zareer holds advanced academic qualifications in the fields of accounting and finance.
