The government has opened applications for higher education scholarships and special scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students seeking to pursue further studies both locally and abroad.
The Maldives Zakat House has announced that applications are now open for a scholarship program offering opportunities for Master’s (Level 9) and PhD (Level 10) studies in various Islamic fields.
These fields encompass Islamic Sharia, Quranic studies, Islamic education, Islamic research and publishing, Islamic journalism, Aqidah (creed), Fiqh (jurisprudence), Usul al-Fiqh (principles of jurisprudence), and Islamic leadership and management.
The Maldives Zakat House has stated that students will have the opportunity to pursue their studies at several local institutions, including the Islamic University of Maldives, the Maldives National University, Villa College, Avid College, and Zikura College.
International opportunities have been made available at prestigious institutions, including Al-Azhar University, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), INCEIF University, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI).
The Zakat House has announced that a total of 30 scholarships will be awarded under this program. Of these, 10 opportunities are designated for studies within the Maldives, while 20 are allocated for overseas education.
Highlighting the introduction of specialized scholarship schemes, the Zakat House noted that these include five opportunities providing stipends for students currently studying in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, as well as five dedicated scholarships to train female doctors in fields related to women's health.
According to the Zakat House, applicants for these scholarship opportunities must be Maldivian citizens aged 18 or older who are in need of financial assistance. Additionally, candidates must meet the academic entry requirements for their chosen program. The Zakat House further specified that applicants must be enrolled in a full-time course accredited by the Maldives Qualifications Authority. Furthermore, candidates must not be current recipients of financial aid from the government or any other institution.
Furthermore, the Zakat House stated that opportunities are available to apply for fields of study beyond those explicitly listed, provided the chosen discipline is essential for the development of Maldivian Islamic society.
When submitting the application, all required documentation—including academic transcripts, the completed application form, and relevant certifications or permits—must be included. The evaluation and selection process will be conducted by the committee established to provide higher education assistance through the Zakat Fund.
The deadline for submitting applications is 14:00 on July 16, 2026. Applications must be submitted via email to scholarship@zakathouse.gov.mv.
