The Bank of Maldives (BML) has initiated a digital collaboration with Maldives Immigration to bolster the safety of its payment networks.
Through this partnership, the country’s national bank now possesses the capability to confirm a cardholder’s geographical location, identifying if they are in the country or abroad, while authorizing credit and debit card payments. As a result, any transaction requiring a physical card at an overseas ATM or point-of-sale terminal will only be approved if the system verifies that the owner is actually outside Maldives. This prevents cards belonging to residents from being used illegally by third parties in foreign locations, though it is specified that this check does not affect online e-commerce purchases.
This technical link-up functions without the two organizations exchanging private customer data. Standard card payments usually involve an automated authorization where the system checks the card's legitimacy, expiration and the balance or credit available. With the new Immigration integration, this automated sequence now incorporates an instantaneous review of the cardholder's travel records to authenticate international usage.
Financial specialists informed RaajjeMV that this is a vital move by the bank given the increasing frequency of financial crimes. The bank described the initiative as a proactive defense against fraudulent activities and scams.
Specifically, BML pointed to cases where stolen, misappropriated or duplicated cards were utilized in foreign countries without the rightful owner's awareness.
While BML’s existing terms and conditions have always permitted the collection of verification data from pertinent authorities, these rules have been updated with more detail to account for the new security protocols. Ensuring the legitimacy of transactions is a basic requirement of international card networks to preserve the reliability of the worldwide payment infrastructure.
