President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has described Mauritius's decision to sever diplomatic ties with the Maldives as an illogical and "immature" move.
President Muizzu made these remarks while addressing the media and responding to questions during his first press conference in eight months. In his statement, President Muizzu affirmed that efforts to reclaim the Maldives' lost maritime territory are ongoing and noted that the government will submit the necessary legal filings to pursue the matter.
Furthermore, addressing Mauritius's decision to sever diplomatic ties with the Maldives, the President characterized the move as nonsensical and "immature." He asserted that the Maldives is the rightful owner of Chagos, emphasizing that this reality remains unchanged.
The President further stated that the Maldives' decision on the matter remains unchanged.
Mauritius's decision to sever diplomatic ties with the Maldives is highly irrational, immature, and naive. Such a move does not alter the underlying facts; even if diplomatic relations are cut, Mauritius cannot claim entitlement to territory that does not rightfully belong to it.President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu
Mauritius decided to sever diplomatic ties with the Maldives during a cabinet meeting held on Friday. The country has now officially announced the decision.
The Prime Minister's Office announced that the government has decided to sever diplomatic ties with the Maldives. This decision follows the Maldivian government's refusal to recognize Mauritius' sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago and its formal objection to the agreement reached between the United Kingdom and Mauritius.
Delivering this year's Presidential Address, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced his decision to withdraw the letter sent to Mauritius by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih regarding the Chagos archipelago dispute. Furthermore, the President stated that his administration would not accept the ruling issued by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) concerning the delimitation of the Maldives' southern maritime boundary, and confirmed that Coast Guard vessels would be deployed to the area to protect and monitor the territory.
