The Criminal Court on Sunday held a hearing regarding the murder of a foreign national during a violent altercation aboard a fishing vessel.
Sunday's hearing was held to deliver the verdict in the case.
In this case, Mohamed Masud, a Bangladeshi national, has been charged with the murder of a fellow countryman, Mohamed Shaheen. He faces a charge of intentional homicide in connection with the incident.
Witnesses in this case testified to seeing the assailant attempt to pull the knife out after stabbing Shaheen. One witness further stated that they saw the attacker attempt to twist the knife while it was still embedded in the victim's body.
Furthermore, witness testimonies revealed that the attack caused Mohamed Shaheen's lungs to collapse and resulted in significant internal and external hemorrhaging.
In his statement to investigators, Masud admitted that a dispute between the two had escalated into a physical altercation. However, he maintained that he did not intentionally stab Shaheen.
Witness testimony in the case reveals that Shaheen was attacked with a sharp knife typically used for cutting yellowfin tuna. Furthermore, the evidence indicates that the perpetrator made no attempt to assist Shaheen following the assault.
The presiding judge ruled that the charges filed in this case have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The presiding judge stated that the deceased is survived by two legal heirs. According to documents submitted through the Bangladesh High Commission, the heirs have requested blood money and expressed that they do not wish for Masud to serve a prison sentence. The legal heirs are the deceased's mother and father.
The prosecution has requested that the hearing regarding the sentencing in this case be rescheduled for another day.
Judge Ibrahim Ihsan is presiding over the case at the Criminal Court. The judge stated that the sentencing hearing will be held later this week.
