Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed has stated that a framework for enforcing civil judgments and a dedicated institution for that purpose are necessary.
Speaking at the ceremony held Sunday night to inaugurate the judicial year, Ghanee highlighted that the civil justice system is an extensive framework. Ghanee stated that while numerous judgments are delivered daily within this system, it is crucial to establish a robust legal mechanism to ensure these rulings are enforced, whether through internal judicial processes or external means.
The Chief Justice has stated that the intended outcomes of court rulings can only be achieved if those judgments are fully enforced as prescribed.
"Today, there is an urgent need for such a mechanism. We must establish a specialized agency, empowered by a robust legal framework, specifically dedicated to the enforcement of these judgments," the Chief Justice stated.
He further stated that the enforcement of court rulings will ensure the establishment of social stability. The Chief Justice noted that this would also bolster the confidence of commercial banks and investors in the Maldives.
Furthermore, the Chief Justice stated that the enforcement of court rulings would provide protection to wives, children, and elderly parents from the adverse effects of domestic disputes. The Chief Justice also noted that ensuring court judgments are executed as intended remains a long-standing aspiration of the judiciary.
Furthermore, the Chief Justice stated that special priority is being given to expediting cases that have faced delays. He also noted that efforts are underway to transform the judiciary into a sector that commands public trust and confidence.
