Two children of Abdul Kareem Abdulla have been dismissed from their government positions following his decision to contest against the ruling People's National Congress (PNC). Abdul Kareem is the brother of the Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
A reliable source has informed RaajjeTV that Abdul Raheem attempted to exert pressure to have his brother’s name withdrawn from the race. Kareem announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Fonadhoo Council on February 1st.
A source informed this newspaper that Dunya Abdul Kareem, who served as a Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Alim Abdul Kareem, an employee at WAMCO in Funadhoo, have been dismissed from their positions. According to the source, Dunya was removed from her post last Wednesday, while Alim was dismissed on Thursday.
Speaking to various media outlets, Kareem highlighted that his children were dismissed from their positions solely because of his decision to contest the election. Kareem, who is visually impaired, further stated that his candidacy aims to send a powerful message: that individuals with disabilities can serve on an equal footing with others and should not be sidelined.
Kareem is the twin brother of Abdul Raheem. Reports are emerging of employment being offered on the condition of withdrawing from the election, as well as the dismissal of public employees as a means of exerting undue influence over the electoral process.
