Judge Mohamed Niyaz, the longest-serving judge on the High Court of the Maldives, has honorably retired after 23 years in the judiciary, stepping down due to health reasons.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) accepted his retirement last month.
In line with JSC’s decision, his retirement formally took effect on 9 December 2025.
Judge Niyaz joined the High Court on 18 January 2018, serving there for more than six years.
Before his High Court appointment, he served in the Magistrate Courts of Vaikaradhoo island of Haa Dhaal atoll and Kulhudhuffushi City beginning in 2002, and also held the role of Chief Magistrate for the Haa Dhaal Atoll judicial sector.
He was appointed to JSC in 2022 and later became its vice president, though he resigned from that post some time ago.
At the time he requested retirement, JSC was investigating five disciplinary matters related to him.
The commission has since confirmed that there are no disciplinary issues pending against him.
Judge Niyaz completed his legal education at the Islamic University of Malaysia and later gained extensive experience through legal studies and work in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
