Aminath Naushan Abdul Muhaimin, Secretary General of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), has tendered her resignation.

RaajjeMV understands that Naushan submitted her resignation last week, providing a one-month notice in accordance with her contractual obligations. As of now, the commission has not issued an official statement regarding her departure.

Prior to her appointment as Secretary General in 2022, Naushan served as the Director of HRCM’s National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), a role focused on preventing torture and protecting the rights of individuals in detention.

Her resignation comes at a time when HRCM is under increasing public scrutiny. The commission is currently investigating the alleged use of a powerful sonic weapon known as a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), by police during an opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest held on October 3. The use of LRAD has raised serious human rights concerns, and critics have accused HRCM of inaction in politically sensitive cases.

In connection with the same protest, HRCM has also met with individuals who were arrested and held in custody for 15 days.
