In a symbolic gesture marking the completion of one of the Maldives’ largest public housing projects, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the key to 4,000 newly built housing units to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in a ceremony held at the President’s Office.
The housing project, launched during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration under the ‘Gedhoruveriyaa’ scheme, was financed through a loan from India’s Exim Bank. Construction began in 2021 and included 1,200 two-bedroom and 2,800 three-bedroom apartments, designed to ease the capital’s long-standing housing shortage.
The handover signals the official completion of the project, which was executed by Indian contractors and supported as part of the bilateral cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC), the state-owned entity overseeing the project, has already begun signing agreements with beneficiaries and is in the process of distributing the apartments.
The current administration conducted a review of the initial list of recipients released by the previous government and published a revised list in April. However, the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has since confirmed that the flats will ultimately be allocated based on the recipient list originally gazetted by the former Solih administration.
