President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to establish a seaplane platform in Velidhoo island of Noonu atoll, with seaplane services scheduled to begin in January next year. The announcement was made during his recent address to residents of the island.

While the development of the airport in nearby Vihafaru is set to progress rapidly, President Muizzu emphasized that the seaplane services will specifically serve Velidhoo, enhancing connectivity for the island’s residents.

In addition to the seaplane initiative, the president also revealed plans to launch a sea ambulance service based in Velidhoo, which is set to start operations in January, aiming to improve emergency healthcare access for the local community.

While reiterating his commitment to the Vihafaru airport project, a promise he first made during his presidential campaign, Muizzu emphasized that the new airport will benefit not only Velidhoo but also neighboring islands such as Hoarafushi, Fodhdhoo, and the wider region.

Highlighting ongoing development efforts on Velidhoo, the most populous island in the atoll, the president pointed to several key projects he has recently inaugurated. These include the commencement of construction on a new hospital and the launch of a Community-Based Rehabilitation Center.

Further, work has also begun on a reclaimed area dedicated to boat-related activities, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Velidhoo Police Station has also been held.

During his visit, Muizzu also addressed a petition submitted by Velidhoo residents, which carried 600 signatures and highlighted ongoing challenges with the harbor. He assured that the relevant ministry would conduct a thorough technical study of the issues raised, and efforts would be made to implement the necessary improvements to meet the community’s needs.

He said that if the requested work cannot be accommodated in this year’s budget, it will be prioritized and included in next year’s budget to ensure timely progress.

Looking ahead, Muizzu also announced several new projects slated for next year, including a housing development and an expansion of classrooms and facilities at the local school. In addition to this, contracts for the construction of a futsal ground and a multi-sport court in Velidhoo are expected to be signed this September.

Reiterating the government’s commitment, the president emphasized that his administration’s policy is to closely monitor the needs of the people and deliver services that reflect their priorities.

During his recent tour of islands in Noonu atoll, Muizzu made a series of new promises alongside those he had pledged earlier, signaling a strong focus on development and community welfare.
