Following the retirement of Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Maldives, Justice Abdulla Hameed has assumed the responsibilities of the position.

Muthasim retired as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on Monday.

Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan submitted his retirement request from the position of Chief Justice in May 2025. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) approved his request and officially confirmed his retirement last Thursday.

In a statement released by the Supreme Court, it was revealed that in connection with Muthasim's honorable retirement from the position of Chief Justice effective 21 July 2025, the administration of the Supreme Court has been handed over to Justice Hameed.

Therefore, starting from Monday, until a new Chief Justice is appointed, all letters addressed to the Supreme Court should be directed to Justice Hameed, who is now in charge of running the Supreme Court, as stated by the Supreme Court.

Muthasim was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Maldives in December 2019. The Supreme Court has expressed its gratitude for the services rendered by Muthasim during his tenure.

Hameed is a former Chief Judge of the High Court. When JSC investigated a case related to Hameed, the People’s Majlis passed a motion to dismiss him from judgeship in 2022. This was regarding the case of accepting an apartment given to judges during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.

Hameed was later appointed to the Supreme Court during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration. Hameed was appointed to the position of Supreme Court Justice on 11 June 2025.
