The legal counsel for the Gulhifalhu Residents' Association, Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim has revealed that the cancellation of land registry and agreements issued by the previous government was done illegally.

He made this statement while speaking at a press conference held by the Gulhifalhu Residents' Association.

The decision to cancel the previous land registry and agreements and issue new ones under the "Gedhoruverin Programme for Issuing State Land" was announced through a public notice. Nishan stated that the previous agreements were cancelled due to changes made to the Gulhifalhu Land Use Plan.

Referring to this, the lawyer said that although a letter was sent informing about the cancellation of Gulhifalhu agreements due to changes in the Land Use Plan, this was not done in accordance with the law. Nishan stressed that there were dangerous aspects in the new agreement.

The lawyer went on to note that from a legal perspective, the way government agencies are proceeding with signing these agreements is unacceptable. He affirmed that all legal procedures for allocating land to those who received plots from the previous government had been completed.

He also mentioned that the presidential term changed after this decision was made. However, Nishan emphasized that a change in government is not a valid reason to nullify a legitimate legal agreement made with the state.

Highlighting that any modifications to the agreement should be made through discussions between both parties involved Nishan stated that it cannot be done otherwise.

The lawyer also asserted that according to general procedural principles, amendments to laws, regulations, or the constitution cannot be made through letters or notes.
