President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has inspected the progress of the 4,000 flats being constructed in Hulhumalé Phase II, under the initiation of the previous administration as part of their housing development schemes.
The president visited the construction sites on Thursday and was briefed on the latest updates regarding the project.
While credit was given to Muizzu for expediting the work on the 4,000 flats project, all necessary arrangements for the project were already put in place by the previous government. Further, the public has directed criticism towards the current administration for not handing over the completed flats to the public.
During his presidential campaign, Muizzu pledged to distribute the flats and land plots allocated by the previous administration according to the original assignments. However, some individuals who were previously selected to receive flats are now reportedly being excluded from the allocation.
The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has begun notifying some individuals who were previously selected to receive flats under the 'Gedhoruveriyaa' scheme, a 4,000 flat project initiated during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, that they no longer meet the eligibility criteria.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib has stated that approximately 700 people will be removed from the list of flat recipients published by the previous government under the Gedhoruveriyaa scheme.
The minister highlighted that the list includes 391 married couples and 302 individuals who already own land or flats. He also mentioned that 305 people who received land under the 'Binveriyaa' scheme are included in the list.
The minister explained that if a married couple is included in the list published by the previous government, only one of them will receive a flat. In addition to this, if an individual's spouse received land under the Binveriyaa scheme, they will only be eligible for a flat if they agree to give up the land.
