A prisoner serving a 25-year sentence has died at Maafushi Prison.
Regarding the incident, the Maldives Correctional Service revealed that Moosa Hassan, 45, and native to Maafaru island of Noonu atoll, who was serving his sentence at Maafushi Prison, died while undergoing treatment.
The department has confirmed the death of Moosa Hassan, an inmate serving a 25-year sentence for a drug-related offense at Maafushi Prison.
According to the department, he was transferred to Malé City in April under emergency medical circumstances and admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment. He passed away due to cardiac arrest at midnight on 5 June 2025 while still receiving care at the facility.
Following the death of Moosa Hassan, Maldives Correctional Service stated that it promptly notified the Maldives Police Service (MPS), his family, the Inspector of Correctional Service, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), as well as the National Integrity Commission (NIC).
