President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that, later this year, all residents of the Greater Malé Region aged 18 and above who do not own a home will be given the opportunity to apply for housing.
In an interview given to the state media PSM, the president said that to fulfill his promise, the project will be announced and opened for applications in the near future. However, the president did not specify an exact date applications will be opened.
He revealed that through the scheme, the opportunity to apply will be available to people from Malé, Malé residents, and anyone above 18 years of age living in Malé even if they are from outlying islands. The only condition is that they must not have a "first shelter" or primary housing.
The president revealed that plots or flats will be given to these individuals from areas including the newly reclaimed land being added to the Malé region.
This includes Malé, Malé, as well as Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Lagoon, Uthuru Thila Falhu, and Ras Malé.
Muizzu’s announcement comes as fulfilling a key presidential pledge to provide a plot of land or flat to every resident over the age of 18 in the Malé area who does not own a home.
