Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has confirmed that investigations are currently underway into Maldives Police Service (MPS) officers suspected of having ties to criminal gangs.

Speaking at the press conference held at the President’s Office on Sunday following the ratification of the Anti-Gangs bill, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen, who is currently serving as Acting Commissioner of Police following the resignation of Ali Shujau, stated that while the bill has been ratified, a three-month grace period has been set for its implementation, with preparations currently underway.

Naveen noted that a Gang Crime Enforcement Unit was established earlier and that efforts are currently underway to train its personnel and enhance investigative capabilities.

Naveen further stated that, in addition to allegations made against a number of police officers, there are also suspicions of links to criminal elements. He confirmed that these cases are currently being investigated by the Professional Standards Command and the National Integrity Commission.

Naveen affirmed the police’s commitment to maintaining public trust, stating that all necessary measures will be taken to prevent gang-related and other serious crimes.
