The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has revealed that more than 8,000 complaints were received ahead of the deadline for submitting complaints, regarding the list of recipients for the 4,000 newly constructed flats in the second phase of Hulhumalé.

The ministry revealed that 8,602 complaints have been submitted for the new flat list released by the current administration.

3,119 were excluded from the 4,000 flats initially announced.

Citing the housing ministry, state media noted that these complaints include those submitted through the portal by people on the 4,000 flats list, as well as complaints submitted by the public via email and letter during the publicly opened opportunity.

A total of 5,236 complaints were submitted through the portal, while 2,840 complaints were submitted via email and 526 complaints were received by letter, according to state media citing the housing ministry.

The complaint submission period was initially open from March 1 through the end of March. Later, an additional 15 days were added, extending the deadline to April 15.

This time when the opportunity was opened, no chances were given to include additional documents. The opportunity was given to write and submit information complainants wanted to include.

As per the scheme's rules, to prove continuous 15-year residency in the capital Malé City, details related to the period from 15 October 2007 to 15 October 2022 had to be included in the complaint. However, a later amendment decided to accept a one-year gap if it was due to special circumstances.

The flat list was publicized on February 27.

The 3,119 people determined not to receive flats comprise 2,695 people the current administration deemed not ineligible and 424 people who did not receive enough points when the evaluation concluded.

With the new government excluding more than half of those on the former administration’s list of flat recipients and creating a new list, many people continue to express concerns and raise their voices regarding the issue.
