Three individuals have been arrested and remanded in connection with allegations that some employees of Maldives Immigration have been abusing their official authority to obtain undue benefits from foreign workers.

According to the Maldives Police Service (MPS), the investigation into the case of some Immigration employees misusing their official authority, commenced on March 20. The police institution has stated that during an operation conducted on the night of March 20, a team of officers searched a residence and arrested three individuals. However, the police institution did not disclose any further details regarding the arrests.

The police institution on Saturday said that the Criminal Court has ordered to remand the three suspects for 10 days.

In connection with the case, former Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed was arrested on March 21, and the Criminal Court ordered for him to be remanded for a period of 15 days.

The police institution revealed that after releasing a foreigner who was taken to Immigration detention, the Immigration officers went to the then Immigration Controller Shamaan's house with MVR 530,000 taken from the expatriate. Shamaan was dismissed from his position not long after the case surfaced.
