Documents of Malé City Council during the mayorship of current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu were digitized by a private company for over MVR 11 million, and it has been revealed that the payment was made before the work was completed.
This came to light when the Malé City Council provided information requested under the Right to Information Act by "Hurihaa," an online news outlet in the Maldives.
The City Council stated that the work was awarded to the alleged private company for MVR 11,610,000.
However, the council admitted that the payment was made before the project wrapped up completely.
In a recent dangerous fire incident at the building housing the Ministry of Housing, a section of the Malé City Council was charred, and important documents including land registry records of Malé residents were reduced to ashes.
This was believed to be a major act of corruption carried out to provide a large sum of money illegitimately to certain parties.
Since President Muizzu assumed office in November 2023, several such major corruption cases have been surfacing, with many people pinning allegations of corruption at him.
