Member of Parliament for South Galolhu constituency Meekail Ahmed Naseem has asserted that the people are witnessing the erosion of trust in the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and the Maldives Police Service (MPS) during every People’s National Congress (PNC) government.
He made this statement while speaking on RaajjeTV's ‘Fala Surukhee’ programme.
Meekail said that the efforts made to increase trust in the police and military over the past five years are now being reversed due to the incumbent administration. He stated that this is happening because the government is using these institutions to carry out actions that undermine trust in the police and military. The lawmaker said that this was one of the reasons why a no-confidence motion had to be submitted against Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan.
In this regard, Meekail highlighted that Minister Ihusaan was present during the largest identity theft in Maldivian history, which was carried out by the current administration, and that he has been acting in a way that hinders the investigation of the scandal. Meekail said this while referring to the case where the main ruling party illegally registered members using information from the Department of National Registration (DNR). He also stated that entrusting the work of the country's expat system to a party in a way that benefits certain individuals unfairly is another reason for the loss of trust in the home minister. Further, he described that the government is excessively influencing the cases being investigated by the police institution.
In this context, Meekail said that the police acted questionably in investigating the corruption allegations against the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). Meekail stated that this is not just happening in this administration, but it is something connected to the ideology of PNC and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s lawmaker said he believes that all the wrongdoings in this administration have happened directly under the supervision of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. He stated that the current administration is openly engaging in many activities such as gaining unfair advantages by using state resources and obstructing investigations.
In addition to this, Meekail said that through the door-to-door activities conducted as part of the main opposition party’s efforts to defend the Constitution of the Maldives, it is evident how disappointed the public is with such actions of the government. Meekail went on to shed light on the importance of as many people as possible attending the MDP rally slated for January 31, to voice these concerns to the government.
