The People's Majlis has greenlighted the appointment of former Ihavandhoo constituency lawmaker Mohamed “Muhamma” Abdulla and former member of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) Aminath Sarahath Izzath to Broadcom.
Two positions at Broadcom became vacant when the terms of the commission's chairperson Mariyam Waheeda and member Ali Yoosuf ended in late December.
With this, the president sent a list to the People’s Majlis with two names he preferred from among those who applied for the opportunity to run for membership of the commission. At the top of the list sent by the president were the names of Mohamed and Ibrahim Muaz Ali, who served as the spokesperson for former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
However, Muaz's name was removed during the interview stage. Therefore, looking at how the committee scored after interviewing, Sarahath made it to the top. Journalist Shifza Musthafa came second, and Mohamed came third.
When the vote was taken to seek approval for Sarahath's appointment to Broadcom, 68 lawmakers voted. When the vote was taken for Shifza, 11 lawmakers representing the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) voted to approve her. 50 lawmakers representing the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) voted against approving her.
However, 58 lawmakers voted to approve Mohamed, who has no experience in the media field.
