Maldives Customs Service has seized drugs from the luggage of an Indian citizen who arrived in the Maldives by air.
The items were seized on 13 December 2024, during an inspection of the luggage of a 31-year-old male Indian passenger who arrived in the Maldives from India, suspected of concealing drugs in his luggage.
Customs said that during the inspection, when items suspected to be drugs were found in the passenger's luggage, initial testing of the substances showed positive results for cannabis, a type of narcotic. The total weight of the items, including packaging, was 235 grams, with an estimated street value of MVR 100,000.
For further investigation of the case, the seized drugs and the passenger have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
Customs frequently seizes large quantities of drugs attempted to be smuggled into the country by air. Just three months ago, they seized 3.48 kilograms of drugs and more than nine kilograms of drugs in separate incidents, which were also attempted to be smuggled into the country by air.
