Taxis involved in Wednesday night’s protest have been seized.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) launched an operation to seize taxis involved in Wednesday night’s protest along Hulhumalé Highway region, churning a significant escalation in the standoff.
Taxi drivers took to the streets to stage a peaceful demonstration starting Wednesday evening, stressing that the government had failed to heed their concerns.
While the taxis involved in the protest were taken into police custody, when drivers asked for clarification on the reason for seizing the taxis, police officers are to have instructed them to come down to the station to get clarification.
The police began towing the taxis without any warning.
More than 20 taxis were taken into police custody by midnight on Wednesday.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, a taxi driver said that despite expressing their concerns and protesting, the government has not yet made any statement regarding the matter.
The taxi drivers have vowed to continue protesting in the coming days if no progress is made on the issue.
Further, the taxi driver claimed that no government in the history of the Maldives has ever harassed people in the taxi industry to this extent.
