Two individuals have been arrested under accusations of dealing with counterfeit money.
The arrests were made in the congested capital Malé City.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that arrested in connection with the case were Aishath Shizny, 25 and native Thimarafushi island of Thaa atoll and Mauzu Mohamed, 29 and native to Hithadhoo district of southernmost Addu City.
The operation was carried out on October 29 after the case was reported to the police institution.
The suspects were arrested and searched, during which 24 counterfeit MVR 500 notes were discovered.
Upon being presented to the Criminal Court for their remand hearing, the two suspects were remanded for a 30-day period.
Further investigations are presently underway in connection with the case.
The police institution has noted that counterfeit MVR 500 notes printed on ordinary paper have been circulating recently.
MPS has urged the public to be cautious in checking the security features of different Maldivian Rufiyaa notes and the quality of the paper on which the currency is printed, while carrying out business and financial transactions.
MPS has also requested the public to report such incidents without delay if encountered.
