Japan donates surveillance equipment to MPS

The equipment was handed over during a ceremony held at Iskandar Koshi

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has received a donation of CCTV camera equipment from UNODC with the assistance of the Japanese government.

The equipment was handed over during a ceremony held at Iskandar Koshi on Sunday.

Ambassador of Japan to Maldives Takeuchi Midori handed over pier surveillance equipment to Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, during the ceremony.

The embassy noted that the project is valued at USD 2.5 million.

It is a joint initiative with UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, CP Shujau stated that this assistance would provide additional support to police operations.

He also acknowledged and expressed gratitude for the various resources provided by Japan and UNODC for the development and infrastructure improvement of the police institution.

MPS presented a commemorative plaque during the ceremony, to show appreciation for the continuous support from the Japanese government and UNODC to the police institution.

UNODC, with the support of the Japanese government, has donated resources needed for various areas of the police institution before as well.

These include land and sea vehicles, drug field test kits, precursor field test kits, and Raman handheld field identification kits.
