The remand period of two men who robbed expatriates after threatening to sever their fingers if they didn’t hand over the money, has been extended.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the incident occurred on September 20, in Rasfannu region of the capital Malé City.

The two individuals are to have threatened the foreign victims with knives, warning them that they would sever their fingers if they didn’t hand over the money.

The suspects then snatched the cash inside one of their wallets.

Two men were arrested in connection with the case; Ahmed Sivaath, 37 and Mohamed Salim, 37, both native to Hithadhoo district of southernmost Addu City.

The money stolen from the foreign victim has since been recovered.

When brought before the court for the second time to determine their remand status, their remand period was extended for an additional 15 days.

They have been charged with armed robbery using a sharp weapon.

The reason given for their continued remand is the potential threat they pose to public safety.
