Several arrests have been made in connection with a drug operation conducted in Velidhoo island of Noonu atoll.

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that the drug operation was conducted jointly by the police Drug Enforcement Department (DED), Counter Narcotics intelligence and north police officers.

During the operation conducted on September 12, officers raided several houses in Velidhoo island and confiscated suspected narcotics.

MPS revealed that the suspected narcotics weighed a total of 1,547.44.

Officers also found a hefty amount of cash including U.S dollars and MVR 5,000.

The seven individuals arrested in connection with the case were presented to the court for their remand hearing.

The court released one of the seven suspects and of the remaining six suspects, one was given eight days in remand and five were remanded for five days.

Remanded for eight days was Ahmed Murushid, 35.

Remanded for five days were Abdulla Nishad, 26, Ahmed Aleem, 26, Ahmed Naushad, 28, Ali Rasheed, 30 and Mohamed Maaid, 28.

According to the police institution, others were also searched during the operation.

Further investigations are currently underway.
