Maldives to join International Atomic Energy Agency

Maldives is to join the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The decision was announced by the President’s Office on Monday.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu made the decision to submit a proposal to the People's Majlis seeking approval for the Maldives to join IAEA.
The decision was based under Article 93(1) of the Constitution of Maldives, following discussions on a paper presented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer during a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, held on Sunday.
The president’s decision was announced during a press conference held at the President’s Office following the cabinet meeting on Sunday.
As such, the presser saw relevant ministers providing detailed information about the decision to the media.
However, the necessity of joining the IAEA at such a time has not been clarified.
The International Atomic Energy Agency is an international organization established in 1957. It was created to regulate nuclear energy production, ensure nuclear energy is produced according to standards, and verify that nuclear energy is not used for military purposes.
