Discussions have been held on areas for strengthening cooperation between the governments of Maldives and Italy.
This was done during a meeting Ambassador of Italy to the Maldives Damiano Francovigh held with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, following a ceremony to present his credentials.
The ceremony, held at the President’s Office on Monday, saw the Italian ambassador presenting his Letters of Credence to the Maldivian president.
The Italian ambassador was escorted to the President’s Office from the Republic Square in a cultural procession, with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band.
Accepting his credentials, President Muizzu welcomed the new Italian ambassador to the Maldives.
The meeting that followed the credentials ceremony saw the Maldivian president and the Italian ambassador engaging in discussions regarding areas for strengthened cooperation, some of which include the tourism sector, climate change mitigation, marine research and health cooperation.
The new Italian ambassador is accredited to the Maldives as a non-resident Ambassador and resides in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Maldives and Italy established diplomatic relations in 1966.
