The five million tree plantation programme has been inaugurated.

The programme comes as part of a significant presidential pledge included in the incumbent administration manifesto, announced at the COP28 summit.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed inaugurated the programme during a special ceremony held at Lonuziyaarai Park in capital Malé City on Wednesday morning.

The programme was inaugurated on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and his spouse as well as Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, senior officials of the government and members of the president’s Cabinet of Ministers joined the ceremony as well.

The President’s Office revealed that the initiative mirrors the government’s commitment to safeguard the country's fragile ecological systems and mitigating the impact of climate change for the benefit of current and future generations.

President Muizzu also unveiled the logo of the five million trees planting programme, at Wednesday’s ceremony.
